The book assesses the factors common to successful bilingual learners, and provides university administrators, policy makers and teachers around the world with a much-needed commentary on the challenges they face in increasingly multilingual surroundings characterized by a heterogeneous student population.

Language Attitudes and Identities in Multilingual China

Bilingualism: A Social Approach pp Cite as. One major characteristic of bilingualism is the way that speakers deploy resources from what may be recognized as two different languages. The meanings of such code-switching, or the motivations of language alternation in bilingual talk, have been discussed within a variety of theoretical paradigms. Within the latter paradigm, conversation analysis CA takes a specifi c stance, stressing the importance of the situated moment-by-moment organization of interaction, of the intelligibility it has for the participants, and of the membership categories that are achieved and made relevant within the interaction itself. Within this framework, the sense of the plurilingual resources used by speakers can neither be mechanistically related to a set of predetermined factors, such as identities or social structures, nor associated with imputed intentions, strategies or goals of the participants. Instead, the questions asked and answered through analyses of empirical data are: how do participants orient to bilingual resources? What intelligibility is given to these resources through the specifi c and local ways in which they are mobilized?

These in-depth case studies provide novel insights in to the fast-changing language situation in multilingual China, and how it changes the meanings of language identity and language learning. This linguistic ethnographic study of language attitudes and identities in contemporary China in the era of multilingualism provides a comprehensive and critical review of the state of the art in the field of language-attitude research, and situates attitudes towards Chinese regional dialects in their social, historical as well as local contexts. The role of language policies and the links between the interactional phenomena and other contextual factors are investigated through the multi-level analysis of linguistic ethnographic data. This study captures the long-term language socialisation process and the moment-to-moment construction of language attitudes at a level of detail that is rarely seen. The narrative is presented in a highly readable style, without compromising the theoretical sophistication and sociolinguistic complexities. Skip to main content Skip to table of contents.

But how do bilinguals argue? What has Burke to tell us about code-switching? This article is based on spoken language and will try to provide some insights on how rhetoric can offer a coherent reflection in order to understand code-switching. Focus will be place on Arabic for the extreme symbolism of its diglossic system. Symbolic action, grammar, rhetoric and dialectic are all elements, according to the Burkean system, useful to describe the strategies men use to affect situations and audiences.

In my junior year of college, I took a course in semantics, which focused on verbal language and solidified my interest in language. I love learning about the history of words, learning new words, and seeing how language changes over time and from one context to the next. The relationship between language and meaning is not a straightforward one. One reason for this complicated relationship is the limitlessness of modern language systems like English. Language is productive in the sense that there are an infinite number of utterances we can make by connecting existing words in new ways.

In linguistics , code-switching or language alternation occurs when a speaker alternates between two or more languages , or language varieties , in the context of a single conversation.

Identity navigation: rethinking languages, literatures and cultures between challenges and misinterpretations edited by Nino Arrigo, Annalisa Bonomo e Karl Chircop Edizioni Sinestesie. Non ho dubbi che il potere oggi vincente in Italia, e non solo in Italia, liquiderebbe questa indicazione come un puro vezzo intellettuale e snobistico. Emma Bonino. This means that the truth about immigration and all its pertaining issues sometimes emerges more strongly in literary representation and crea- tion rather than in demographic and economic statistics, even though the former and the latter should suffice to undermine the predominant perception of the toxic and conspirational nature of a process which has always been associated with human experience and artistic crea- tion. As with all deepest fears, even that of the foreigner is a cultural con- cern and, to a large extent, its political antidotes have to be cultural ones. What is usually written and successfully spread about the phenomenon is most of the time false or commonly propagandistic.
