An evolutionary perspective forms the foundation of the entire discussion. The book begins with the natural history of the planet considers portions of the whole in the middle chapters and ends with another perspective of the entire planet in the concluding chapter.

Ecology : concepts and applications

Genres: Anatomy. This book was written for students taking their first undergraduate course in ecology. We have assumed that students in this one-semester course have some knowledge of basic chemistry and mathematics and have had a course in general biology, which included introductions to evolution, physiology, and biological diversity. An evolutionary perspective forms the foundation of the entire textbook, as it is needed to support understanding of major concepts. Sections II through VI build a hierarchical perspective through the traditional subdisciplines of ecology: section II concerns adaptations to the environment; section III focuses on population ecology; section IV presents the ecology of interactions; section V summarizes community and ecosystem ecology; and finally, section VI discusses large-scale ecology, including chapters on landscape, geographic, and global ecology. These topics were first introduced in section I within its discussion of the biomes. In summary, the book begins with an overview of the biosphere, considers portions of the whole in the middle chapters, and ends with another perspective of the entire planet in the concluding chapter.

There has been a growing public interest in the role and value of natural ecosystems and how they contribute to our quality of life and to human wellbeing. Ecosystems services and their continued provision underpin human existence, health and prosperity. Governments, communities and natural resource managers are taking a broader ecosystem approach to decision making for natural resource management issues that can achieve multiple benefits for landowners and society. Biodiversity is central to the production of ecosystem services; it is the direct source of services, such as food and fibre, and underpins others, such as clean water and air, through the role of organisms in energy and material cycles.

This book continues the authoritative and established edited series of theoretical ecology books initiated by Robert May which helped pave the way for ecology to become a more robust theoretical science, encouraging the modern biologist to better understand the mathematics behind their theories. This latest instalment in the Theoretical Ecology series builds on the legacy of its predecessors with a completely new set of contributions.

Speight and Peter A. This book began life as a series of lectures given to second and third year undergraduates at Oxford University. These lectures were designed to give students insights as to how marine ecosystems functioned, how they were being affected by natural and human interventions, and how we might be able to conserve them and manage them sustainably for the good of people, both recreationally and economically. This book presents 10 chapters, beginning with principles of oceanography important to ecology, through discussions of the magnitude of marine biodiversity and the factors influencing it, the functioning of marine ecosystems at within trophic levels such as primary production, competition and dispersal, to different trophic level interactions such as herbivory, predation and parasitism. The final three chapters look at the more applied aspects of marine ecology, discussion fisheries, human impacts, and management and conservation. Other textbooks covering similar topics tend to treat the topics from the point of view of separate ecosystems, with chapters on reefs, rocks and deep sea.
